We have led groups in clinical settings for years- both in person and virtually and I love seeing how the group space can provide such connection and transformation. In sharing your struggles and successes with others there is so much to be learned, gained and connected on. I have witnessed clients find immense growth from engaging in group therapy that the choice to provide group therapy in my practice was a no brainer for me. We offer process and DBT skills groups throughout the year. Groups are 1 hour in length and hold anywhere from 4-15 group members at a time.

Ever wonder what group therapy is?

Process groups: Process groups are a space to share your experiences, share in your struggles and successes, and get real time feedback, support, and validation from the other group members. This is a space of connection and learning. Sometimes, process groups will have a general topic- such as grief- that would hold a commonality between the group members to discuss each other's experiences of grief, and other times no topic is assigned and is an open process group, for anyone to come and share about anything in their life impacting their mental health. Process groups are more heavily participant led than skill groups, meaning the facilitator does not bring in topics and provide all of the feedback, rather you will get peer feedback and support, and a facilitator will be there to help support and hold the safe space.

DBT Skills groups: Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is an evidence based therapy that teaches coping skills to assist with mindfulness, regulating emotions, effectively communicating with others, and tolerating distress. DBT has been used to treat mood disorders, personality disorders, ADHD, and changes in behavioral patterns such as self harm, substance use or suicidal ideation. During a DBT group, you will learn skills week by week to manage symptoms and be able to ask questions, get feedback and receive support from the group. In my opinion, this is a life skills group that everyone could benefit from having and using. These groups tend to be 12 weeks in length, meeting weekly.

Benefits of Group Therapy:

  • Develop communication and socialization skills

  • Receive support and connection with others- recognition that you are not alone in your struggles

  • Improved mood

  • Build understanding in self and others

  • Gain new perspectives

  • Increase self awareness

  • Learn skills in a group atmosphere, and see how others are applying the skills in their life
